Hey,
I dont really think standup id dead on the east coast, just a little slow. The outer banks of NC is slowly catching on. If you do a few searchs i've seen some stuff in the NY area.
The east coast is always a little behind in some sort of way. In my area Southern South Carolina, Hilton Head, SUP is the rave. There are over a 15 paddlers that own boards and I take out a lot of people too. Rebecca (paddle partner) being one of them. '''That reminds me, I have to call her...'''
There are about 8 of us that are CORE SUP and thats all we talk about. ...They know who they are... We're out all the time.. any conditions on any water.. I have the website and blog site and try to promote SUP starting w/ my little golf resort town. www.atlanticpaddlesurfing.blogspot.com and www.atlanticpaddlesurfing.com I use the sites to share my passion of STAND UP..
Thank you to all that have viewed my sites, added SUP story and shared their personal experiences all over the world. We are '''ONE BIG PADDLE FAMILY''' Glen
Doing my best to get the Philly area going. Already had some of my outrigger friends wonder what the hell I was doing when they saw me on the water tonight. There's a windsurf shop out of Bethlehem and AC that is pretty high on the sport.
I picked up an Amundson 11'3". And while I am primarily a paddler, I quickly found out my learning curve to dealing with the chop on the ocean is going to be a little longer than I expected. Tried paddling out from the bay through the inlet to meet up with the family on the beach. Made it through the inlet fine (water coming from three directions so I was a bit worried), but when I got past the jetties I just kept falling off every 30 seconds or so. Ended up paddling back to a beach near the inlet on knees. Think I'll stick to carrying the board to the beach and just going in and out of the surf and save the flatwater paddling for separate occasions. Definitely fun though. Had all the boats passing by staring and thinking it was the coolest thing they've ever seen.
Nope. surfing is brand spanking new to me. I've been paddling for 10 years now, primarily in outriggers, dragonboats and a little bit of kayaking. I think I can hold my own on flatwater, but balancing in the surf and rough water is a bit of a challenge at the moment. Had to work today but am back down the shore for tomorrow, Thursday afternoon and all day Friday. So hopefully I'll get some more time in the surf and work on my balance. I'm an extreme novice at snowboarding too (skiing is more my thing), so I'll be determined this winter to get a bit more proficient at that. Though talking to a couple snowboarders who picked up this sport, they've said they had a tougher learning curve than they expected. I was like, "great....".

Whatever job you have, I want it. I'd love to be able to chill in the water all day! Lucky.
I think that I'm going to Montauk this weekend and I hear there is a small paddle surfing community there. I'm not sure how it will work out for me but I hope it goes well!
that's not normal for work. have a house in Avalon for a week with the family. Just running back and forth for work when I have to. Back to normal next week unfortunately and back to paddling on the Schuylkill.
I did see one guy on a board while I was falling all over the place. He was doing better than I but didn't look completely confident on it. When I got back in this little girl came up to me and said, "my dad was laughing at you." I said, "I'm sure he wasn't the only one." Though even with all my up and down he was still intrigued and thought about buying one.
I'm going to try and go out tomorrow morning after a run. Calmer water, less wind. Though I'd rather get a workout in and stick to the bay. We'll see.

How'd it go this morning?
I'm definitely trying this in Montauk tomorrow. The zipcar is booked and I'll be on my way in the morning. Any advice for someone who is more comfortable jumping off a mountain than standing on something in the water? I thought about taking a lesson but I think I'd rather just dive right in and hope that I don't regret it. I'll let you know how it goes.
Did you then tell the little girl that her daddy was only laughing to mask the shame he felt from not being brave enough to try it himself? :)
Actually ran this morning and paddled late in the afternoon. I stayed on the bay for a solid 45 minute paddle. I'm use to sitting in a boat of some sort (outrigger, canoe, kayak) so it's a pretty interesting change. It's definitely more taxing on the core, and I bend my knees a bit to really power up the stroke. I'm sure as I get more comfortable I'll be able to drive through with the upper arm a bit more like when i normally paddle. I wanted to get a workout in instead of fight to just stand up.
I'd definitely say start on flatwater and get comfortable with the stroke and initial stability before venturing out into the open ocean. I'd definitely open myself up to some surfing lessons to get up on the learning curve a bit. At least on the slopes the ground isn't moving so the only thing making you fall is your own inability to stay off the lower edge. At least that's my problem in getting comfy on a snowboard and what ends up putting me on my butt. If you're going to venture onto open water, go in the morning when there's less wind and less chop to contend with.
You always have to venture out on your own before taking a lesson. I took a lesson in snowboarding, and everything they taught me on the bunny slope I could've learned from a book and taken it right to the greens.
I think I had about five people taking pictures of me on the bay today. One guy mentioned his son brought a board back with him from HI. That's a shame as I'm sure he paid $300 plus to bring it with him, and there seems to be access to most boards around here.
I think the girl's dad was getting enticed to give it a shot as he asked me quite a few questions about it. I was to busy swallowing humble pie. Looked all calm cool and collected setting up and heading out through the surf. Then I tried to stand up and paddle, and I was pretty much exposed to all on the beach. I think I gave quite a show.
Good luck tomorrow. Look forward to hearing how it goes.
